The relevance of having knowledge of the different technology related learning theories

Understanding how students learn will aid educators in developing a more effective teaching methods. Knowledge that is gain from the different technology learning theory provides a framework for educators to understand how information is used, how knowledge is created, and how learning takes place. Having the basic knowledge of the theories will equip us as educators on how to better able to create lessons that enhance the learning process. This information allows teachers to provide an explanation their instructional choices. Three key learning theories that support technology integration are as follows:

·   Behaviorism: These theorists are of the view that learner’s behavior is formed through reinforcement.

·     Cognitivism: The theorists believes that new knowledge is built upon existing knowledge.

·   Constructivism: learner’s construct knowledge through previous experiences, attitudes and beliefs. In order for new learning experiences to take place all these human factors must be taken into consideration to help individuals adapt their new knowledge in order for them to learn.

 Each learning theory that support the integration of technology provides a different    perspective on learning and the fundamental principles to enable it. These theories influences and shapes the practices and methods of education.

When teachers have the knowledge of the different learning theories it will resonate within them and help them to better able to create and design lessons that are effective and efficient based on those theories. The knowledge will also help educators to develop their own personal instructional philosophies that guide their future instructional design.

As a teacher in designing instructional lessons, the goal is to ensure that learning is relevant and tailored to the needs of the learners. Knowledge in the different related theories on technology allows teachers to use these theories as lenses as it vital that as teachers we apply the right theories strategies to help our learners to reach and achieved their goals.

The increase demand for online education has widen the need for more knowledge in understanding the different theories that is related to the integration of technology as  teachers has to use more technology tools when creating blended learning programs. With the knowledge of the theories on the integration of technology in the teaching and learning, teachers are more able to quickly construct a learning environment that enhances students' ability to interact with one another through conversation, cooperation, and feedback.
